A brief summary of your summer assignment for AP Lang is below. Be sure to read the entire document before the school year lets out so that you can ask any questions before the year ends. You'll be taking a practice AP Lang exam on July 17th, so please make sure you do #1-2 BEFORE then.
AP Lang Summer Assignment
- Read and annotated “What Do Students Need to Know About Rhetoric” by Hepzibah Roskelly. Please print out a copy of the work by Roskelly and mark your annotations directly onto it. You will submit your copy with annotations to your instructor on the first day of school.
- Study the rhetorical terms that have been provided to you in the AP packet. Then, transfer the term, its definition, and examples onto flashcards that you can easily refer to throughout the year. (I suggest buying a small “recipe box” or pencil pouch to store your cards in.) You will also have a test sometime within the first week of school on your knowledge and understanding of these terms.
- Prepare to take a practice AP Language and Composition exam here at Pathways on July 17th. The exam will take exactly 3.5 hours, but you will be asked to score the multiple choice responses as a group and discuss the exam as a whole. Therefore, you will be here from 10AM – 2:30 PM. Please make arrangements to attend on this date.
- Lastly (after you've done your rhetorical terms)– please purchase a copy of The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger to read over the summer. Read and annotate this novel based on the rhetorical terms you’ve been provided. You will need to have read the entire novel before returning back to school in August. There will be a quiz on the novel within the first few days to determine your knowledge and understanding of both the novel and the terms.
